Dining: La Soeur du Patron

Carl dos Santos and his sister Vanessa are celebrating a double Christmas whammy as they mark 20 years since they took over this fine Brussels brasserie. They also have another reason to celebrate – the recent opening of a new wine bar (Le Bar Du Patron) adjacent to the restaurant.

The welcoming Vanessa and Carl are forever looking at ways to evolve the dining experience with the aim of  ensuring that their business stays as fresh as the ingredients used in their delightful dishes. Choose from an extensive à la carte boasting a wide range of items, from old Belgian favourites such as veal kidneys to exotic offerings such as Pad Thai.

Carl and Vanessa have a part Brazilian/Portuguese background and this is reflected in some of the delicious dishes which are carefully designed and selected by Carl himself.

A great suggestions list changes monthly and there’s also a 3-course, €28 evening card. The 2-course, €14.50 lunch menu and dish of the day, priced a mere €9, are also very popular. The extensive menus come in different languages, including English.

Whether it’s burgers or prime Scottish salmon there really is something for all tastes at this lovely restaurant which, with its original 19th century brick walls and ceiling has all the charm and intimacy of a rustic country inn.

An extension will be completed over Christmas and you really do have to pinch yourself to remember you are dining just a few kilometres from the city centre. The atmospheric new wine bar, which adjoins the restaurant, is ideal for a before-dinner drink or if you just fancy a small snack such as burgers or croquettes.

Carl and Vanessa plan to open a new outdoor terrace next year but before that, they’ve got the small matter of organizing a special 20th birthday bash for their business.
