St. Valentine’s Day: Don’t forget the roses

1818

St. Valentine’s Day is approaching fast but if you have a tendency to do or say the wrong thing, you may be dreading it.

Here, then, is a handy little Together Magazine guide to help point you in the right direction, to either keep your loved one sweet or make a new love blossom.

First of all, is there anything better than beginning the day with breakfast in bed, just the two of you? If you agree the “Cocooning breaking” service, which delivers a fresh, artisan breakfast direct to your home or work, is the right place to begin your day with something yummy. Several formulas are available, just make your choice!

Or, why not try the ‘Fifty Shades of Great Valentine’s Package’ at the city’s Marriott Hotel Group?

You can spice up your love life with its ‘Valentine’s Package’ which includes a welcome drink, overnight accommodation for two people in a deluxe room, dinner, welcome amenities, in room breakfast, late checkout and cinema tickets.

The aphrodisiac-themed dinner includes a glass of Rosé Sauvage Champagne; Love bites; Dominant lobster, Succulent Black Angus beef filet and Melting chocolate heart.

You could also check out “O Siam” for a moment of relaxation together. Have a massage, hammam or beauty treatment… Massages are good for seduction and brighten your day, so think about essential oils and offer a massage to your beloved one at this Evere-based wellness centre.

When was the last time you went to the cinema, just the two of you? Valentine’s Day is your excuse! Drop the children at granny’s and go to the cinema! A comedy or a romantic movie will make a nice start to a great evening.

If Cupid’s arrow fails to find the mark with that why not try the “Tram Experience” which, for the first time, welcomes chefs from beyond Europe’s borders.

Montreal, Puebla and Chicago have sent their best chefs to give food lovers and romantics a real treat… just in time for Valentine’s Day. Chefs Laurent Godbout (Montreal), Ángel Vázquez Castelán (Puebla) and Andrew Zimmerman (Chicago) can’t wait to add a touch of je t’aime to your plans for 14 February.

The now traditional ‘Love Bugs’ parade takes place on 15 February in front of the Autoworld Museum in Brussels, bringing together more than 200 four -wheeled VW representatives for Valentine’s Day. From here they will set off on a four hour run through the city’s streets.

When it comes to gifts, it doesn’t matter if you’ve been dating for six months or six years, trying to decipher what to do for Valentine’s Day is always an anxious and confusing process.

Maybe your first instinct is to buy something you probably cannot afford that’s ultimately completely impersonal. A €300 watch. A diamond necklace. A ring that’s a little too engagement-ringy.

If you are going to treat your nearest and dearest, one novel (and very practical!) idea might be a Magimix toaster for a romantic breakfast. Alternatively, splash the cash on a bottle of fine Canard-Duchêne champagne or maybe some ‘confits’ of Didden. If you’re in the Waterloo area there is one shop you should head for… the appropriately named ‘Valentine’, close to the town hall.

Arguably, the secret to Valentine’s Day is being sentimental. It’s showing how much you love them by proving how well you know them. Unlike the other holidays, Valentine’s Day is uniquely about the two of you, and the love you share.

So,if there’s anyone out there who loves Valentine’s Day (i.e. has not been disillusioned by time and tide and really ugly greeting cards), we dedicate this story to you.

Oh, and of course, don’t forget those red roses…
