Niche Brussels shop offers Christmas gift ideas

Christmas is coming (well, some shops are already adorned with Xmas decorations) so you may be thinking of gift ideas.

If so, there’s a small shop in the EU quarter of Brussels that might help out.

The Paumes Objets Choisis boutique is at 42 Avenue Léon Mahillon in Schaerbeek and, in its own way, has contributed to the development of the district.

It is run by Bénédicte Lejeune who was initially trained as a decorator and has enjoyed a career in property renovation and interior design.

Bénédicte explained, “The idea of creating Paumes was born in 2016 from two small terracotta pots brought back from a trip to Burkina Faso. How could we share these beautiful travel discoveries?”

Opening a shop selling such decorative objects was the answer.

Such an outlet was, she says, also a “dream” adding, “so, I decided to go ahead and offer my chosen objects to people in my neighbourhood.”

In the small shop, Bénédicte sells objects from Tunisia, Spain, India, Bangladesh, France, Belgium and elsewhere.

These chosen objects, she told this website, have a history.

They tell the story of a culture, but also of the craftspeople who made them – passionate people who know how to work their materials with an artistic touch.

Bénédicte selects objects according to the ethical standards under which they are made, and to promote employment and craftsmanship in the various countries with which she works.

The result of her selection is an original range of objects not easily found elsewhere.

At Paumes, you will find decorative items as well as household linen, glasses, candles in recycled objects, dishes… for yourself or as gifts (including for Christmas).

The range changes frequently, as Bénédicte continues to travel and visit craftspeople she has fallen in love with both abroad and in Belgium.
