The first in a series of shows at the American embassy will highlight Belgian designers with American pizzazz.
Wife to the American ambassador to Belgium, Dr Michelle Loewinger, organized the event, which showcased one American and one Belgian designer, at the embassy 31 March. The chosen American designer was Milly by Michelle Smith, who is based in New York City. Designer Anna Heylen was picked to represent Belgium at the fashion affair; like many Belgian designers, Heylen is based in Antwerp.
Loewinger wrote in the event pamphlet, “I had the vision of promoting rising but still relatively unknown Belgian designers to Americans combined with American counterparts who have not yet established footholds in Belgium.”
Loewinger also said the embassy hopes to show natural cultural partnerships, bring support for the relationship between the two countries, and draw media and public backing for the participating designers.
