‘Paroles tissées’ (Woven words)
Hamsi Boubeker is a unique, self-taught artist, born in Bejaia, a small town in the Kabylia region of Algeria. His original pictorial creations take us on a voyage of discovery through local traditions and, in particular, the symbolic motifs formerly used by women as a means of communication. Hamsi battles against the oblivion that threatens their culture, and his paintings communicate a rounded image of a country, an entire way of life, while giving it a dreamlike quality. His painting is a mixture of geometric design inspired by tradition and the representation of “the realistic and the naive”.
Alongside the exhibition, Art Company is organizing four workshops which will explore the symbolism of Kabylian culture while creating graphics from geometric and pictorial Berber patterns, in acrylic or ink. Art Company. Until April 28
