First Lady Chooses Belgian Designer for India Trip

The First Lady has opted to wear clothes by Belgian designer Dries Van Noten for her current tour of Asia. Mrs Obama, who was accompanying President Barack Obama on his visit to India, has previously worn several pieces by Van Noten.

Van Noten uses embrodery and beading – two main features of tradtional Inidan design and two of its great contributions to the modern fashion industry.

Designers in Europe and New York often seek inspiration from Indian designers to create some of their elaborate pieces on the runway. Van Noten, who is known for his love of ethnic-inspired fabrics and lavish decoration, is particularly indebted to India’s skill at fine handiwork.

Mrs. Obama wore one of his richly printed skirts at the Ghandi memorial.
