The upcoming Flagey “Piano Days” promise to offer an opportunity to discover works from very varied periods and styles, performed by artists of different origins and generations.
Flagey wishes to establish itself as the reference venue for the piano in Europe and the 12th edition of the festival will once again welcome established names – with several big names such as Sir András Schiff, Angela Hewitt and Arcadi Volodos – alongside promising young pianists.
The exceptional acoustics of the Art Deco building and its warm atmosphere will allow piano lovers and curious visitors to discover the piano repertoire in all its diversity, through a programme which gives pride of place to the great classics while offering formats shorter.
The piano lends itself to all musical genres, to all eras and all temperaments.
To reflect this diversity, the Flagey Piano Days (February 12-16) offer a programme combining excellence, diversity and curiosity, through a wide range of works and performers.
Bringing together artists at different stages of their careers is at the heart of Flagey’s mission, a “talent scout” who is keen to associate the big names of today with the stars of tomorrow.
Several internationally renowned artists will perform for the first time at Flagey, starting with Sir András Schiff, who will open the festival with an “original, adventurous and imaginative” programme.
Another artist making her debut at Studio 4 is Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt who will perform two very different piano concertos by Mozart (Nos. 15 and 24), alongside the Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by Kazushi Ono.
Together, they will close the festival with the divine Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 and Schubert’s 9th Symphony.
Another international star, the Russian pianist Arcadi Volodos, will play the 6 Musical Moments and the great Piano Sonata No. 20 by Schubert. This is his fourth visit to Flagey but his first participation in the festival.
Alexander Gavrylyuk, an Australian of Ukrainian origin, will perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major, accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège under the direction of Lionel Bringuier, their future musical director (13.02, 20:15).
Flagey Piano Days does not forget young spectators of all ages either.
One of the treats for younger visitors to the event is Contes de Papier by the Artichoke Company, is a musical show intended for the “public of tomorrow”, combining theater, lyrical singing, piano, cut-outs and shadow theater, all accompanied by the music of Robert and Clara Schumann.
An event spokesman said, “This is a hugely popular event and offers a bit of something for everyone.”
