Knitwear care is part of enjoying a good autumn wardrobe. Before replacing a favourite wool sweater, give its washing instructions, drying routine and place on the shelf the same attention you gave to choosing it.
The label comes first
Not every wool garment needs the same treatment. Woolmark’s guidance distinguishes between items approved for machine washing, those labelled for hand washing and garments that require dry cleaning.
Read the care label on the actual piece, rather than borrowing instructions from another sweater. A blend, a finish or a detail may change what the manufacturer recommends.
Keep those instructions somewhere easy to find. Taking a photograph of the label when a garment enters your wardrobe is a simple way to retain the information even if the printing becomes difficult to read.
Wash with a purpose
Woolmark recommends a neutral, mild detergent for washing wool. Where the care label permits machine washing, use an appropriate wool programme and follow the garment’s instructions.
For a hand-wash-only piece, the organisation’s guidance calls for gentle washing in lukewarm water with a mild detergent. The important habit is to follow a consistent method, rather than improvising with whatever is already beside the sink.
Treat a stain as a reason to check the relevant care instructions, not automatically to scrub harder. If a valuable piece needs specialist attention, ask a cleaner or repairer before experimenting.
Let drying preserve the shape
Woolmark recommends drying a washed wool sweater flat unless its care label allows tumble drying. This is a step worth planning before the wash, so that the right space is available when the garment is wet.
Give the sweater its own surface and time to dry properly. The aim is a routine you can repeat easily, rather than a rescue operation after every wash.
Make room on the shelf
For storage, Woolmark advises cleaning garments first and folding rather than hanging them to help retain their shape. The International Wool Textile Organisation also emphasises storing woollen items clean.
Use the seasonal wardrobe change to check each piece and decide what needs care or repair. A favourite sweater earns its place through repeated wear; looking after it is a quieter pleasure than shopping for its replacement.
