Reaching for the stars – at Belgium Space Week

Are you interested in space?

If so, the upcoming Belgian Space Week 2024 will be just for you.

It takes place from October 6 to 9 and, say the organisers, promises to be an “unmissable” event for finding out more about the future of aerospace.

This year, the Euro Space Centre and the Mars Society Belgium are joining forces to offer what they call a unique experience: allowing young people to meet major figures in space.

It is, they add, also a chance to highlight future challenges in space and celebrate the work of university teams in Belgium who are pushing back the frontiers of space exploration.

From Monday October 7 to Wednesday October 9, a series of events will take place in Wallonia and Brussels: conferences and meetings with students (at HEPL, ULB, UCLouvain, UNamur), a “Stellar Scape” exhibition, and presentation of the Artémis/Melissa projects.

On October 8, in the morning, the Euro Space Centre, located just south of Dinant, will greet a delegation of astronauts as part of Space Week.

The astronauts are: Anna Fisher (USA), Dumitru Prunariu (Romania), Franz Viehbock (Austria) and Vladimir Pletser, a Belgian astronaut candidate from the 1991 selection and former head of parabolic aircraft flights at the ESA along with Dirk Frimout, also an astronaut.

The centre has invited no less than 500 students who will have the opportunity to meet the astronauts and ask them questions.

The programme includes a reception for the delegation, presentations and a tour of the centre itself.

On October 8, the astronaut delegation will give a series of presentations, followed by a Q&A session. After this session the media gets a chance to put some space-related questions to people who have experienced it first hand.

A spokesman for the event said, “It promises to be an experience not to be missed for all those who want to be at the heart of innovation and the space adventure of tomorrow.”
