The return of the Renault Twingo is more than just the launch of a new car. It marks the revival of one of Europe’s most beloved automotive icons, this time reimagined for a fully electric future.
Earlier this month, Renault made a bold statement during Antwerp Design Week by transforming the city’s trendy Eilandje district into a vibrant Twingo-inspired urban playground, bringing together design, art, lifestyle and sustainable mobility in a celebration of creativity and innovation.
The activation offered visitors a glimpse into the future of city driving while paying homage to the original Twingo, a model that became a cultural phenomenon throughout Europe in the 1990s thanks to its colourful personality, clever design and accessible appeal.
A New Generation for an Icon
The new Renault Twingo E-Tech Electric has been designed specifically for modern urban life.
Compact on the outside yet surprisingly spacious inside, the latest generation combines playful styling with advanced technology and zero-emission driving. Renault has sought to create a vehicle that delivers practicality without sacrificing character, making it particularly appealing to city dwellers looking for an affordable electric alternative.
Among the key features are Google-integrated connectivity, One Pedal Driving technology and a driving range of up to 263 kilometres, making it ideal for everyday urban journeys.
Perhaps most significantly, Renault has managed to keep the vehicle accessible, with a projected starting price below €20,000, an increasingly rare achievement in today’s electric vehicle market.
Antwerp Goes Twingo Green
To celebrate the launch, Renault temporarily transformed popular Antwerp venues BelRoy’s and 53.eleven into the “Twingo Terrace”, a colourful destination dedicated entirely to the spirit of the new model.
Green-themed installations, playful branding and distinctive Twingo-inspired design elements created a vibrant atmosphere throughout the Eilandje neighbourhood, attracting both automotive enthusiasts and design lovers alike.
At the centre of the activation stood a unique Twingo Art Car created by Brussels-based multidisciplinary artist Carl Cash Knight.
The vehicle was transformed into a rolling work of art, reflecting the playful DNA of the new Twingo through bold colours, graphic elements and contemporary artistic expression. Throughout the event, the installation served as a striking visual landmark and one of Antwerp Design Week’s most photographed attractions.
The Frog in the City
Internally, Renault has affectionately nicknamed the new Twingo “The Frog in the City”, a reference to its expressive front-end design and cheerful personality.
To bring this character to life, visitors were invited to sample the exclusive “Twingo Red Cheeks” mocktail, created especially for the event. Combining raspberry, lime, crème de violette and soda, the drink reflected the playful spirit and vibrant colours associated with the vehicle.
The activation deliberately blurred the lines between automotive marketing, design exhibition and lifestyle experience, creating an environment far removed from the traditional showroom setting.
Designed to Make People Smile
According to Renault, the new Twingo has been developed around a simple objective: bringing joy back to urban mobility.
Its rounded shapes, friendly appearance, colourful details and extensive customisation options are all intended to create an emotional connection with drivers. Inside, playful design touches and hidden “Easter eggs” reinforce the model’s youthful and optimistic character.
At the same time, Renault has preserved many of the practical elements that made the original Twingo such a success. Clever storage solutions, a spacious cabin and versatile interior functionality ensure that the new model remains as practical as it is stylish.
A Fresh Approach to Urban Mobility
As European cities continue their transition towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation, manufacturers face the challenge of making electric vehicles both desirable and accessible.
With the Twingo E-Tech Electric, Renault appears determined to prove that urban mobility does not have to be purely functional. Instead, it can be creative, emotional and fun.
The Antwerp Design Week takeover demonstrated precisely that philosophy: a city car that is not merely a means of transport, but a lifestyle statement designed for a new generation of urban explorers.
For many, the return of the Twingo will evoke memories of the original icon. For a new generation of drivers, it may well become the electric city car that defines the next chapter of urban mobility.
