A porcelain cup can tell a story about far more than its decoration. Le Magasin de Porcelaine, at the Domaine & Musée royal de Mariemont in Morlanwelz, looks at the people and changing tastes behind the objects. Running until 9 May 2027, the exhibition makes a thoughtful cultural outing for readers interested in Belgian craftsmanship and interiors.

Inside Le Magasin de Porcelaine

The exhibition follows a Brussels porcelain manufactory that operated from 1830 to 2020. It moves between the shopfront and the activities behind it, introducing the makers, workers, sales staff, customers and managers who shaped the business.

That human perspective gives familiar objects another dimension. Pieces made for different settings and uses become evidence of changing lifestyles, artistic movements and production methods. The story connects the pleasure of looking at porcelain with questions about how it was produced, sold and valued.

Craftsmanship in the present

The exhibition also extends into contemporary work through a partnership with the Office des Métiers d’Art de la Province de Hainaut. Ceramics sit within a wider conversation that includes jewellery, textiles, lace, bookbinding and stained glass.

For a design-minded visitor, this is an invitation to compare approaches across time. Look at the relationship between an object’s shape and its purpose, or how a decorative motif changes when it is translated into another material. These are useful starting points for exploring the displays, rather than a claim that every piece follows the same tradition.
