An evening examining Art Nouveau Brussels

183

Fancy taking a musical stroll with Henri La Fontaine through the symbolist and esoteric Art Nouveau Brussels?

If so, an upcoming event in the city could be just for you.

The event is a lecture by Roland Van der Hoeven on Rops, Khnopff, Delville, three major figures of the Symbolist visual arts, and also Brussels musical life in the period from 1870-1914.

All three maintained deep connections with the musical world, both interpersonally and artistically.

The figure of Joséphin Péladan, the whimsical driving force of this Symbolist, esoteric, and artistic world, will permeate the discussion.

In contrast to this elitist, royalist, and ultramontane Péladanism, the social engagement of Brussels’ Symbolist artists will be explored.

The event will be musically illustrated, emphasizing a music/literature dimension and revealing that fin-de-siècle Brussels was one of the leading centers of European musical creation.

Following his presentation, the author will be pleased to comment on some of the exhibited works, which exemplify his points.

It takes place on 9 December, starting at 6.30pm.

Location: Maison Hannon, Avenue de la Jonction 1, 1060 Saint-Gilles.

Duration: 60 minutes, followed by a tour of the exhibition. Anyone interested is asked to  confirm their attendance, as places are limited.
