As winter approaches, many families begin the annual debate: Which ski destination will satisfy everyone? Between piste quality, snow security, accessibility, après-ski, cuisine and activities for non-skiers, choosing the right destination can feel overwhelming.
Fortunately, there is one region that ticks every box — the Haute Savoie.
One of France’s premier winter-sports destinations, the Haute Savoie stretches across the southeast border with Italy and offers an exceptional mix of world-class ski resorts, charming alpine villages and unique winter attractions suited to all ages.
A Magical Start to Winter: The Father Christmas Hamlet in Andilly
At the gateway to the Haute Savoie, just 25 minutes from Geneva Airport, families can begin their holiday in enchanting style at the Father Christmas Hamlet in Andilly.
Open from mid-October, this festive park allows children to tour the homes of Father Christmas, Mrs Claus and Mother Christmas, complete with workshops, elves and Christmas magic. It’s interactive, charming and the perfect way to start a winter holiday.
A Sporting Detour: The Sylvie Becaert Biathlon Stadium

For families wanting a break from downhill skiing, the Sylvie Becaert Biathlon Stadium in Le Grand Bornand offers a different kind of winter thrill. Used for Olympic and world-class events, it’s the only biathlon venue of its level in France.
Throughout the year, it hosts major events such as Tour de France stages and paragliding competitions. Accessible via ski bus from nearby La Clusaz, it’s well worth checking the event schedule for a memorable day out.
La Clusaz itself is a wonderfully traditional Savoyard village at 1,000 metres, with a picturesque town square, wooden chalets, high-quality restaurants and inviting boutiques, including the excellent Le Carnotzet.
The Grand Massif: Vast Slopes and Mont Blanc Views
From La Clusaz, it’s a short journey to the Grand Massif, one of the largest ski areas in the French Alps. Spread across five resorts, including Flaine and Les Carroz — the Grand Massif covers 40,000 hectares and offers spectacular views of Mont Blanc.
Each resort has its own personality:
- Flaine – modern, snow-sure and ideal for adventurous skiers
- Les Carroz – charming, welcoming and perfect for families
Together, they offer a blend of slopes suitable for beginners through to experts.
Morzine–Les Gets: Family-Friendly, Scenic and Part of a Giant Ski Domain
Further west, Morzine–Les Gets is a favourite among intermediate skiers and families. With over 120 km of pistes and 48 lifts, it offers variety without overwhelming
beginners. But for those seeking more, it is also part of the gigantic Portes du Soleil, which boasts:
- 307 pistes
- 208 lifts
- 300+ km of slopes
For a unique off-slope activity, the Aigles du Léman bird-of-prey sanctuary sits on the nearby Nyon plateau. The park features falcons, owls and several species of majestic eagles, including the white-tailed eagle now being reintroduced to the region.
Visitors can take falconry workshops, join educational tours and even participate in ski races against falcons — an unforgettable experience for the whole family.
Avoriaz: Snow Security and Après-Ski Energy
Sitting at 1,800 metres, the resort of Avoriaz boasts outstanding snow reliability from early to late season. Some lifts reach nearly 2,500 metres, and with 130 km of local pistes, plus full access to the Portes du Soleil, it is an ideal base for serious skiers.
Avoriaz also delivers one of the best après-ski scenes in the Alps.
The party begins mid-afternoon at La Folie Douce, and continues in the resort’s cosy bars, lounges and live-entertainment venues, such as La Cabane, which combine dinner, music and cocktails long into the evening.
Chamonix: The Crown Jewel of Haute Savoie

No tour of the Haute Savoie would be complete without Chamonix, arguably the most legendary mountain resort in the world. Visited year-round, Chamonix blends alpine sport, high-end shopping, dining and vibrant nightlife in a stunning valley dominated by Mont Blanc.
Families, including non-skiers, will love the scenic Montenvers train ride to the Mer de Glace, a journey of 5 km into the mountains reaching more than 1,900 metres in altitude. Visitors can admire glacier views, explore the Glaciorium to learn about climate change and enjoy an aperitif in the historic mountain hotel.
This is winter magic at its finest.
