25 Meir unthrones Nieuwstraat as busiest shopping street

The Antwerp high-street known as the Meir is today the busiest shopping street in Belgium. The real estate firm Fastigon has worked out that for the first time in recent history ‘the Meir’ in Antwerp than rue Neuve in central Brussels.

Indeed rue Neuve is no longer the most popular shopping street and local business people are now calling out for urgent action to make the thoroughfare more attractive.

Two years ago the number of passers-by on the Meir in Antwerp totalled 180,000 a week. Today this figure has shot up to 290,000.

In contrast only 230,000 passers-by visited the rue Neuve in Brussels during the same week.
