The appointment is the first time ever that the BBC has enlisted the services of a Belgian to direct one of its television dramas.

Jakob Verbruggen is a well-known and respected figure in Flemish television, having produced successful drama series such as the commercial broadcaster VTM’s series about the Antwerp vice squad “Code 37”.

Jakob Verbruggen will start work on “The Fall” at the end of March. “The Fall” tells the story of the personal life of a serial killer. A female police officer is trying to catch the killer before he strikes again. The role of the policewoman will be played by the actress Gillian Anderson who is best known for her performances as Scully in “The X-Files”.

“The Fall” has been written by Alan Bubitt who also wrote “Anna Karenina” and “The runaways”.
