Simon Leysen looks at three Botswana luxury accommodation options for a safari.
Little Vumbura Camp: Remote Safari Splendour
Botswana offers a wide range of luxury tented camps and the one region that sets Botswana apart from all other safari destinations is the Okavango Delta. This majestic area offers unique wildlife viewing in stunning settings. One of the best bases to visit the Delta is Little Vumbura camp operated by Wilderness safaris.
Little Vumbura is a true boutique camp with just six luxury tents on a small island in the middle of the Delta. A short hop from Maun in one of Wilderness’ Cessna’s and a 4 minute boat ride will bring you to the floating pier that leads to this luxury, yet relaxed, camp.
On the pier, you will be welcomed by the staff who make this camp extra special. Little Vumbura has a truly relaxed air about it and the staff is professional, courteous but makes you feel at home. After an ever tasty lunch, you will be able to relax in the dipping pool overlooking the plains before afternoon tea and an evening game drive or boat tour before meeting the other guest and guides for dinner.
Since the camp is surrounded by the Delta, water is a central part of all activities: boat safari and sunset Mokoro (dugout canoe) tours will not disappoint. However, it is also a great place to explore the wildlife by 4×4 safari vehicle. Morning and afternoon drives will allow you to view the abundant game in the area: elephant, giraffe, impala, sable antelope, kudu, zebra, tsessebe, wildebeest, red lechwe and Cape buffalo, hippo as well as crocodiles can be found in the waterway and predators including African wild dog, lions as well as leopard inhabit the area.
Little Vumbura is set on a 60,000 hectare private concession which it shares with Vumbura Plains camp. This means you’re really in the middle of nowhere, in a good way. The concession is a private safari area of around 575 square kilometres. It combines dry mopane woodland, grasslands, seasonal floodplains and permanent river channels. The beauty is that area is restricted to just 40 guests!
The camp has 6 tents, and by tents, you should understand luxury room under canvas, each with a gorgeous viewing deck
Little Vumbura is ideal for those seeking a more intimate and personalised safari experience. The small number of guests and remote location make the perfect safari getaway.
