The fifth edition of the Brussels competition that celebrates that gem of Belgian cuisine, the delicious shrimp croquette, has been held.
After a blind taste test, the jury made up of food journalists, members of the public, the two winners of the previous four editions and chaired by Lionel Rigolet, made its decision and crowned “Bouillon” as the winner.
The”Best Shrimp Croquette in Brussels” competition was part of the Eat Festival and the grand champion is Bouillon, with Brasserie Ommegang and Lola completing the top 3.
The call for applications was launched in July. To take part in the competition, participants had to meet the following criteria: own an establishment, canteen, bar or food truck operating and located in the Brussels-Capital Region and serve homemade shrimp croquettes on their menu
A total of 15 establishments answered the call: Aux armes de bruxelles, Bouillon, Brasserie Ommegang, Crush, Kroket, La taverne du passage, Le Petit Bistro, L’harmony, Les caves d’Alex, Les petits oignons, Les trappistes, Le variétés, Lola, Toucan Brasserie, Zotte Mouche.
They showcased their talent, crafting this delicious, quintessentially Belgian dish. This year, a handful of lucky Eat Festival visitors also had the opportunity to taste and judge some of the croquettes that were presented to the jury.
To assess the croquettes, the jury of food journalists, members of the public and chefs used a scoring sheet to establish a hierarchy. Points were allocated based on various criteria, including crispiness, flavour and quality of the shrimp.
Bouillon will be able to use the title of “Best shrimp croquette in Brussels” for the entire year following the announcement of the results.
