Brussels landmark unveils its latest innovative installation

242

Brussels’ Atomium is more than just an architectural icon—it’s a symbol of innovation, creativity, and cultural evolution.

This landmark is once again pushing artistic boundaries with CROSSING, the latest immersive digital art installation by the renowned Visual System collective.

Running until January 4, 2026, this three-dimensional experience blends light, sound, and space to create a multi-sensory journey unlike any other.

A Living, Breathing Installation

With CROSSING, Visual System continues its mission of merging art and technology. This time, they are transforming an entire sphere of the Atomium, not just filling the space with light but making it feel alive. The installation connects the sphere’s two levels through an organic structure that seems to grow and expand, reaching beyond its initial boundaries into the staircase and escalator leading inside.

The effect is mesmerizing. Like a living organism, the installation appears to emerge, evolve, and flourish, drawing visitors into an interactive experience where light and movement react to their presence. Accompanied by a specially composed original soundtrack by Thomas Vaquié, the installation engages both sight and sound, making visitors feel like they are stepping into another world—one that breathes, pulses, and responds in real time.

A Collaboration Built on Innovation

CROSSING is not the first collaboration between Visual System and the Atomium. Over the years, the two have worked together on several groundbreaking projects. Notable past works include:

  • CENTRALE, a permanent light sculpture at the heart of the Atomium, demonstrating the collective’s ability to blend light and structure seamlessly and
  • Look Up, a transformation of the Atomium’s iconic elevator, turning a simple ride into a dynamic light and sound experience.

With each project, the Atomium continues to solidify its reputation as a space where historical architecture meets the future of artistic expression. CROSSING takes this vision even further, proving that the Atomium is not just a relic of the past, but a living, evolving cultural landmark.

The Atomium: A Hub for Digital Art

In recent years, the Atomium has increasingly embraced digital and immersive art, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and contemporary creativity. One of its most recent successes, Echoes of Distant Lights, was unveiled in December 2024.

Created by Brussels-based artist Antoine Goldschmidt, the installation combines light, movement and storytelling to captivate audiences.

This growing focus on digital experiences is clearly resonating with visitors. In 2024 alone, the Atomium welcomed a record-breaking 844,427 visitors, proving that its artistic initiatives are drawing more people than ever. By investing in projects like CROSSING, the Atomium continues to ensure its place as a must-visit cultural destination in Brussels.
