Children today are the first generation to grow up surrounded by smartphones, tablets and streaming services from infancy. Technology has transformed childhood in remarkable ways, but what does the science actually tell us about how constant screen exposure affects the developing brain?
Walk into almost any café, airport or restaurant today and you are likely to witness a familiar scene. A toddler quietly watches cartoons on a tablet while their parents enjoy a few moments of conversation. A preschooler effortlessly swipes through YouTube videos before they have even learned to read. For many families, screens have become part of everyday life, offering entertainment, education and, at times, a much-needed helping hand.
There is no doubt that technology has brought enormous benefits. Children can video call grandparents across the world, explore interactive educational games and access information that previous generations could only have imagined. Yet alongside these opportunities comes an increasingly important question: what happens when a developing brain spends thousands of hours interacting with screens instead of people?
The answer is more nuanced than many headlines suggest. Scientists are not warning that screens are “destroying” childhood, nor do they believe all screen time is harmful. Instead, a growing body of research suggests that how children use screens, what they watch, and how much time screens replace face-to-face interaction all influence healthy brain development.
The First Five Years: A Critical Window for Brain Development
During the first five years of life, the human brain develops at an extraordinary pace. Millions of new neural connections are formed every second as children learn language, develop emotional regulation, strengthen memory and begin to understand the world around them.
One of the most important drivers of this development is something psychologists call “serve-and-return” interaction. A baby smiles, points or babbles, and an adult responds with eye contact, conversation or affection. These seemingly simple exchanges strengthen the brain networks responsible for communication, attention and social understanding.
This is one reason why paediatricians place so much emphasis on reading together, talking during meals and encouraging imaginative play. The developing brain is shaped not simply by receiving information, but by interacting with other people.
Not All Screen Time Is the Same
One of the biggest misconceptions is that every minute spent in front of a screen has the same effect.
Watching fast-paced videos alone for hours is very different from video calling grandparents, completing an educational activity with a parent or reading an interactive story together. A major 2024 systematic review published in JAMA Pediatrics, which analysed 100 studies involving more than 176,000 children, concluded that the context of screen use matters just as much as the amount of time spent on screens. Co-viewing with parents and age-appropriate educational content were associated with better cognitive outcomes than passive viewing or exposure to inappropriate content.
In other words, parents should think beyond simply counting hours. The quality of digital experiences matters.
The Brain’s Reward System: Why Screens Feel So Compelling
One reason children find digital devices so captivating lies within the brain’s reward system.
Whenever we experience something enjoyable, whether eating our favourite meal, solving a puzzle or receiving praise, the brain releases dopamine. Contrary to popular belief, dopamine is not simply the brain’s “pleasure chemical.” Its primary role is motivation. It encourages us to repeat behaviours that the brain considers rewarding.
Many modern digital platforms are carefully designed to keep that reward system engaged. Endless scrolling, autoplay videos, rapid scene changes and unpredictable new content continually stimulate curiosity and encourage us to keep watching.
For adults, resisting these design features can already be challenging. Young children may be even more vulnerable because the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for self-control, planning and impulse regulation, continues developing well into early adulthood.
Researchers are still investigating exactly how these reward pathways are influenced by prolonged screen exposure. While there is no evidence that ordinary screen use permanently “damages” the dopamine system, scientists are exploring whether repeated exposure to highly stimulating digital content may make slower activities such as reading, imaginative play or classroom learning feel comparatively less rewarding. This remains an evolving area of research, but it highlights why moderation and variety are so important.
Are Attention Spans Really Getting Shorter?
Parents and teachers often worry that children today struggle to concentrate for long periods. The research suggests the picture is more complex than simply blaming smartphones.
Several large studies have found that higher levels of recreational screen use are associated with greater attention difficulties in some children. However, these studies cannot prove that screens are the direct cause. Children who already have attention challenges may naturally gravitate towards highly stimulating digital media, while sleep, physical activity and family routines also influence concentration.
Nevertheless, neuroscientists have proposed a plausible explanation. Traditional activities such as reading, drawing, building with blocks or imaginative play require children to sustain attention and tolerate moments of boredom. By contrast, many digital platforms provide constant novelty with very little effort from the viewer.
Over time, this may make slower-paced activities feel less engaging, not because children are incapable of concentrating, but because their brains become accustomed to continuous stimulation. While more long-term research is needed, many experts recommend balancing screen use with activities that naturally strengthen attention, including outdoor play, music, sport and reading.
Language Is Learned Through Conversation
Perhaps the strongest evidence concerns language development.
Children do not learn language simply by hearing words. They learn through conversation. Every time a parent responds to a child’s question, names an object, reads a bedtime story or encourages discussion, the brain is building the neural pathways responsible for communication.
A 2024 study published in JAMA Pediatrics found that increased screen time among children aged 12 to 36 months was associated with fewer adult words spoken, fewer child vocalisations and fewer back-and-forth conversations throughout the day. In other words, the concern is often not the screen itself but what it replaces.
This distinction is crucial. Watching an educational programme together and talking about what is happening is very different from passive viewing alone. The research increasingly suggests that children benefit most when digital media becomes a shared experience rather than a substitute for interaction.
Executive Function: Building the Brain’s Control Centre
Executive function refers to the mental skills that help children plan, solve problems, control impulses and remember instructions. These abilities underpin learning, emotional regulation and social development throughout life.
A recent systematic review examining screen time, language development and executive function concluded that excessive or poorly managed screen exposure may be associated with weaker executive functioning, particularly when it replaces sleep, physical activity and opportunities for imaginative play. However, the researchers also emphasised that family environment, parental involvement and the type of screen content significantly influence outcomes.
The encouraging news is that executive function is highly adaptable. Board games, reading, creative play, music, sports and everyday problem-solving all help strengthen these skills throughout childhood.
Finding a Healthy Balance
The conversation around children’s screen time is often framed as a battle between technology and traditional childhood. In reality, the evidence points towards a far more balanced conclusion.
Screens are now an unavoidable part of modern life, and they are not inherently harmful. They can educate, entertain and connect families across continents. The goal is not to eliminate technology, but to ensure it does not replace the experiences that developing brains need most: conversation, movement, creativity, sleep and meaningful relationships.
For parents, that means choosing high-quality content, watching together whenever possible, creating screen-free family routines and making time every day for activities that encourage children to explore the real world.
Because the most powerful influence on a child’s developing brain is not the device in their hands.
It is the people who choose to put their own devices down and spend time with them.
