Caroline Wozniacki suffered a humiliating loss in the French Open third round and another top ten seed Samantha Stosur joined her on a gloomy day for women’s tennis.
Wozniacki was easily beaten 6-1, 6-3 by Slovakian 28th seed Daniela Hantuchova, following world number 2 Clijsters defeat on Thursday as the top two seeds failed to advance past the third round at Roland Garros for the first time in forty years.
World number 2 Clijsters’ loss the day before, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, to the 20-year-old Arantxa Rus was a surprise, but could partly be explained as a reaction to her lay off due to ankle injuries sustained in March whilst playing and a month later at a family wedding celebration.
Despite being a winner at the US and Australian Open this is tournament Clijsters has never won unlike her former Belgian rival Justine Henin who was the victor at Roland Garros four times.
