The concert of “White Wednesday” at the Cathedral of Saint Michael and Saint Gudula in Brussels will be dedicated to the sublime Stabat Mater by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi.

This has been hailed as “a true gem of Baroque sacred music.”

Composed shortly before Pergolesi’s premature death, this poignant work explores the pain of the Virgin Mary at the foot of the cross with unparalleled depth.

The text of the Stabat Mater is a liturgical text dating back to the early 13th century.

It describes the Virgin’s suffering for her crucified son. It was added to the Christian rituals in 1727 by Pope Benedict XIII.

The first part of the text describes Mary’s suffering, while the second is a prayer addressed to her to support her in her agonies.
