When American author, journalist and motivational speaker, Diana Nyad turned 60 her mother died at 82, and she realized how little time she had left and wondered why she had gone through all those decades with negative thoughts, recalling too many times when she had just let things go by.
At the age of 64, after five attempts, she swam across the Florida Straits from Cuba to Florida – a distance of about 110 miles (177 kilometers) – without a shark cage. After the 53-hour swim, Nyad arrived at Key West and said: “We should never, ever give up. You never are too old to chase your dreams.”
