Why Hinterglemm is one of Austria’s most complete winter destinations, from world-class skiing to refined alpine luxury
Hinterglemm: Alpine Charm at the Heart of Austria’s Skicircus
Set in the Pinzgau region of Salzburg, the alpine hamlet of Hinterglemm is one of Austria’s most appealing winter destinations. Together with Saalbach, Leogang and Fieberbrunn, it forms the vast Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, one of the country’s largest and most diverse ski areas.
Hinterglemm’s pedestrianised village centre is lively yet relaxed. Shops, inviting bars and excellent restaurants line the streets, making it a pleasure to explore on foot. Moreover, its seamless connection to Saalbach expands dining, shopping and nightlife options even further.
One of Austria’s Largest Ski Areas
The Skicircus offers over 270 kilometres of groomed pistes, placing it among Austria’s most extensive ski regions. Importantly, the terrain suits all levels.
Beginners benefit from wide, forgiving blue runs. Intermediate skiers enjoy long red descents. Experts, meanwhile, can test themselves on steeper black slopes and freeride areas.
In addition, the region features snow parks, illuminated pistes and toboggan runs. This diversity makes Hinterglemm ideal for families, mixed-ability groups and experienced skiers alike.
The area’s reputation is also confirmed at elite level. In February 2025, it hosted the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. From 11 to 17 January 2026, the FIS Alpine Para Ski World Cup will take place at the Zwölferkogel in Hinterglemm.
Even More Slopes with the Ski ALPIN CARD
For those seeking variety, the Ski ALPIN CARD unlocks access to two additional premium Austrian regions. These include Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See and the Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun.
Altogether, this expands the skiable terrain to up to 408 kilometres of slopes. As a result, visitors can explore glacier skiing, panoramic lake views and high-alpine descents from a single base.
Refined Après-Ski and White Pearl Mountain Days
Hinterglemm is well known for its après-ski culture. More than 60 traditional mountain huts offer warm hospitality, regional cuisine and relaxed slope-side breaks.
However, one of the area’s most appealing recent additions is the White Pearl Mountain Days festival. Held each March, the event combines wellness activities, international cuisine and live music.
Unlike louder party festivals elsewhere, White Pearl Mountain Days attract a more mature audience. The atmosphere is stylish, social and uplifting. In 2026, the festival runs from 20 to 29 March, making it an excellent time to visit.
Where to Stay: Wiesergut Boutique Hotel
For guests seeking discreet luxury close to the slopes, Wiesergut is a standout choice. Located just steps from the lifts, this boutique design hotel is built around a historic farmhouse and offers only 24 suites.
Each suite features a balcony or terrace with mountain views. The Garden Suites go further, offering private gardens, exclusive saunas and outdoor hot tubs. Open fireplaces and freestanding bathtubs add further refinement.
At the top end, the BergLoft sets a new benchmark. This 360-square-metre private apartment includes a 15-metre outdoor pool, sauna, home cinema and private entrance, ideal for families or groups seeking total privacy.
A Culinary Destination in Its Own Right
Wiesergut’s restaurant matches the standard of its accommodation. Head Chef Andreas Hollin creates menus that range from light alpine comfort food to a refined seven-course crossover tasting menu.
Ingredients are locally sourced wherever possible, including produce from the hotel’s own farm. Wines highlight regional specialities rarely found beyond Austria. Even the tableware reflects attention to detail, with handmade ceramics from Burgenland produced exclusively for the hotel.
An Alpine Destination That Delivers on Every Level
Hinterglemm successfully combines scale with intimacy. It offers serious skiing, a lively yet refined village atmosphere and outstanding accommodation. Whether visiting for sport, relaxation or gastronomy, it delivers a complete alpine experience.
For travellers seeking a premium ski holiday with depth, comfort and authenticity, Hinterglemm remains one of Austria’s most rewarding winter destinations.
