Anyone who is a fan of staples such as asparagus, artichokes, Brussels sprouts, chicory and garlic will be pleased to find out they are all very good for you, according to the latest scientific studies to come out of British universities.

So forget about super fruits, such as all the ones that are red and celebrate super veg which comes in several colours as long as it is green.

Scientists have found that certain types of vegetable contain fibres that can control hunger and blood sugar levels. Fermentable carbohydrates are thought to activate the release of gut hormones that reduce appetite, which help in the fight against obesity and type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease.

“By investigating how appetite and blood glucose levels are regulated in people at high risk of Type 2 diabetes, it is hoped that we can find a way to prevent its onset,” Nicola Guess of Imperial College, London is reported to have said.

She added that a study would find out if these carbohydrates can help reduce the chance of catching an increasingly common disease.

Another study by the University of Leicester suggests that daily portion of green vegetables such as Brussels sprouts, broccoli, kale, spinach and cabbage that are rich in antioxidants and magnesium also help reduce the effects of diabetes.

People often comment that Belgium at times can seem like Italy with rain, now the country has a diet to rival the Mediterranean too.
