In 2023, the Queen Elisabeth Competition is dedicated to singing. Young classically trained singers between 18 and 33 years old vie for this prestigious award to launch their international careers. Tickets for the first round and the semi-final are almost sold out, but reservations for the final (1-3 June) are still open.

The 412 entrants have been whittled down to just 24, from around the world. In January, their videos were viewed behind closed doors by an international jury, chaired for the first time by Bernard Foccroulle.

The semi-final starts tomorrow and continues to Thursday, it can be followed online, from the Reine Elisabeth website.

The different rounds will take place in Flagey and the Palais des Beaux-Arts. In the final round, the remaining contenders will sing three to six pieces of their own choice, including at least one opera aria, and include at least two different languages. The will be accompanied by La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra led by Alain Altinoglu.

If you can’t make these dates, the top six laureates will perform  at the Bozar closing concert on 13 June. In Gent in De Bijloke, on 15 June (www.operaballet.be) and in Antwerp (18 June) in DeSingel.
