Belgium is set for yet more sporting success after its women’s basketball team qualified for the Women’s Euro 2025.

This, says “Focus on Belgium,” is a “source of pride for Belgium.”

Despite tough opposition, the Belgian Cats, as the basketball team is called, kept fighting in the qualifiers and emerged with a 69-70 victory over Lithuania. This victory means they are top of their group, and their place at the 2025 European Championship is now guaranteed.

In 2023, the Belgian Cats took first place at the championship.

Focus on Belgium asks, “Will they do the same this year?

It also said the Belgian team thanked their new coach, Mike Thibault.

“The American-born coach of the Belgian Cats has been able to advise  and encourage his team, leading them straight to victory,” it says.

At the 2024 Olympics the Belgian Cats won through to the quarter-finals, a fine achievement.

Euro 2025 takes place from 18 to 29 June in Bologna (Italy), Brno (Czech Republic), Hamburg (Germany) and Piraeus (Greece).

Focus on Belgium reports that, since its first bronze medal at the 2017 European Championships, “this golden generation has been growing.”

It states, “The Belgian Cats had already shown how much they had in store at the Olympics (7th) and at the last two World Cups (4th in 2018 and 5th in 2022) , led by coach Philippe Mestdagh. But never in basketball had a Belgian team managed to climb to the top podium at a major international tournament.”
