The deal helps to secure the future in Belgium of the famous F1 race after questions had been raised over its financial viability in recent years including a suggestion last summer by Spa directors that the race may have to be shared with Germany.

“By becoming the title sponsor of the 2011 Formula One Shell Belgian Grand Prix, Shell continues to prove its commitment to the sport and play a key role in its enduring success,” said Formula One Management chief excecutive officer Bernie Ecclestone. “We recognize the valuable contribution made by Shell over many years and are delighted to provide an environment for this global brand to develop its commercial products.”

Shell has been involved in Formula One for over 60 years and already has a technical partnership with the Ferrari race team until 2015

“The Formula One Shell Belgian Grand Prix is a cornerstone of the Formula One World Championship calendar,” said John Bullock, executive vice president of Shell Retail. “Similarly, Shell has been a leading innovator throughout the history of the sport. The title sponsorship will align our values in a sport recognised as the pinnacle of motor racing and demonstrate Shell’s innovation to a growing global following of motorists.”
